Manage access to files and the uploads folder
Protect Uploads Pro provides controls for individual WordPress media files and the uploads directory. For a file, assign one or more passwords and add labels to distinguish audiences or sharing contexts. Password protection works with images, PDFs, videos and documents. Access logs record activity for password-protected files, including IP addresses and user agents.
To address browsing of the uploads directory, Protect Uploads can add an index.php file at its root or configure an .htaccess response that returns a 403 Forbidden error. Server options may disable the .htaccess option. Built-in Site Health checks report whether the directory is protected from browsing, identify the server in use and flag risky file types in the uploads folder.
Additional controls for images and downloads
The Pro edition includes tools for managing picture presentation and download access:
- Image watermarks: Add text to uploaded images. Settings include text, position, opacity and font size, and watermark operations can be applied in bulk.
- Expiring download links: Share links intended to remain available for a limited period.
- Role-based access: Restrict access by user role, with server-level enforcement.
- Hotlink protection: Help control direct use of media from other locations.
- Download analytics: Review information about how protected files are accessed.
- Protected Download block: Place protected downloads in WordPress content with the dedicated block.
Configure protection
Open Settings → Media → Protect Uploads and enable the controls relevant to the site. To protect an individual item, edit it in the Media Library and use its Password Protection section to add passwords and descriptive labels. For images, set the watermark text, position, opacity and font size before applying the available watermark operations.
Add and activate Protect Uploads Pro in WordPress to begin. The interface is available in English, Français, Español and Italian.
