Commerce events
For WooCommerce, the data layer includes GA4 events for product discovery, cart activity, checkout, orders, refunds, and subscriptions:
- Product and cart:
view_item_list,select_item,view_item,add_to_wishlist,add_to_cart,view_cart, andremove_from_cart. - Checkout:
begin_checkout,add_shipping_info, andadd_payment_info. - Orders and subscriptions:
purchase,refund,order_paid,order_processing,order_completed,order_refunded, andsubscription_started.
Easy Digital Downloads includes view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, and purchase. You can also pick post data for the data layer, including post type, page type, categories, tags, title, ID, date, and author name or ID.
What happens when tracking fails?
Once a day, GTM Kit checks one of your pages as a visitor would receive it. It reports if the container is missing or loading twice, and identifies the add-on or tool adding the second copy when it can. WordPress Site Health checks container setup and delivery, consent configuration, whether settings can be saved, and whether a Google tag served from your own domain is working. The Info tab shows the configuration on one screen and can copy it into a support request.
On websites WordPress identifies as staging, development, or local, the container is left out by default so test traffic does not reach a live analytics property. The data layer is still built, and a setting lets you load the container when you intend to measure a test website.
Choose a tag-delivery method
GTM Kit can serve the Google tag from your own domain. Before enabling this option, it checks that your server can reach Google and that the serving address is reachable; both checks repeat daily. If either check fails, the plugin returns to standard container loading and notifies you. This option is off by default. It can help load a tag when a request to Google’s domain would be blocked, while measurement still goes to Google. Sending measurement through your domain as well requires Google’s tag gateway through a supported CDN or host.
A custom domain for a server-side Google Tag Manager container is a separate configuration. GTM Kit also works with a custom loader, including the loader provided for Stape hosting. You can delay the container script until the browser is idle and exclude matching pages from the container, its noscript fallback, and its data layer scripts. Glob patterns are supported, with optional regular expressions for advanced matching.
Settings and setup
The Tools page can import settings from other Google Tag Manager add-ons. Before saving, it shows which settings will be replaced; it only changes settings the other plugin configured. Imports can include the container ID, data layer variables, Consent Mode defaults, excluded user roles, and container environment.
Install the plugin through WordPress, open its settings, and complete Setup with your container details. Review Events & data layer, Commerce, Consent & privacy, and Tools, then use the available diagnostics to check the configuration.
