Conditions control which fields appear
Place fields inside a “Conditional fields Group” tag to keep them hidden by default. In the “Conditional fields” tab, create conditions that show a group when its rules match. Groups can be nested, and required fields in hidden groups do not trigger validation errors. Advanced visitors can also enter conditions as plain text in Text View.
Pro capabilities support longer and more detailed forms
- Repeatable fields: Let users provide multiple entries of the same general type.
- Multistep forms: Divide a longer form into separate steps.
- Calculated fields: Derive values from submitted form information.
- JavaScript functions in conditions: Add conditional behavior for advanced form requirements.
- Multiple file uploads: Accommodate multiple uploaded files in a form process.
Group visibility can shape email content
Wrap email content in matching group tags so it appears when the corresponding form group is visible. To show content only when a group is hidden, use inverted tags such as [!group-name] ... [/!group-name]. Nested groups can also be represented in the form and email.
Unique field names keep submitted values distinct
Conditional groups hide fields; they do not remove them. All fields are submitted with the form, including fields in groups that are not visible. Give every field a unique name, even when two fields are never visible at the same time, to avoid unexpected submitted values.
JavaScript and theme setup affect group behavior
If groups stay visible or do not respond, check the browser console for JavaScript errors. The conditional scripts load at the bottom of the page, so an earlier error can prevent them from running. The theme must also call wp_footer(), which loads the conditional code. Browser developer tools can help locate errors; gradually disabling extensions and changing the theme can help identify conflicts.
Set up the form and its conditions
Install the Conditional Fields components alongside Contact Form 7, edit the form, and place conditional groups around the fields they control. Open the “Conditional fields” tab to create conditions, then configure the Pro features the form needs, such as repeaters, steps, calculations, JavaScript functions or multiple uploads. Update the email template with matching group tags if its content should follow the visitor’s selected path.
