Date and time shortcodes for WordPress

The underlying WP Date and Time Shortcode add-on displays current, past, or future dates and times in posts and pages. The main [wpdts] shortcode uses the date and time formats from WordPress settings. Other shortcode forms provide those formats separately, custom PHP date and time formats, individual date components, timestamps, and time-zone information.

Depending on the shortcode and attributes, output can include a year, month, day, hour, minute, second, day or week of the year, or the number of days in a month or year. Month and weekday values can appear as numbers, full names, or abbreviations. Attributes can set a fixed or relative starting date, use a post's creation or modification time, choose an upcoming weekday or date, and add or subtract time before displaying the result. Other settings control case, day suffixes, 12- or 24-hour time, and leading zeros.

Proposed additions for dynamic displays

  • Cached pages: JavaScript can update shortcode results on cached pages and posts.
  • Event dates: Additional starting values include first and last visits, Catholic and Orthodox Easter, Passover, Hanukkah, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year. Visit values may be saved in a cookie, session, or user option when possible.
  • Visitor time zones: A browser or IP-based parameter can adjust the result to a visitor's time zone. IP-based detection is not completely accurate.
  • Presentation: The style option changes font face, color, and size. A counter can update displayed values as a ticking text clock.
  • Shortcode setup: The Shortcode Wizard guides customers through creating shortcode combinations.

Using the shortcodes

Place a shortcode in a post or page, then configure its output, starting value, format, time adjustments, and display options. Shortcodes in titles, menus, footers, widgets, or other theme areas may need additional code or a add-on if the theme does not process shortcodes there by default.
