How WordPress email reaches Amazon SES

WP Offload SES Lite routes WordPress email through Amazon SES, its supported sending service. It works with the standard wp_mail() function, so compatible extensions can use the same route for form messages and newsletter-related email. Examples include Ninja Forms, Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, and Email Subscribers & Newsletters.

The free Lite edition helps configure sending and review activity. The paid WP Offload SES edition adds open and click reporting, automatic and manual retries for failed sends, email search, and resending sent messages.

Verify the sender before enabling website email

Install and activate the extension, then go to Settings > WP Offload SES in the WordPress dashboard and follow the setup wizard to configure the AWS account and add-on. Set the default email address and name for WordPress notifications, then verify the sending domain or email address. Send a test message before enabling site-wide sending. Custom Reply-To and Return Path addresses are also available.

An Amazon Web Services account is required. WP Offload SES works with Amazon SES; other email sending services are not currently supported.

Review sending activity and limits

Lite lists emails sent from the site and shows Amazon SES send-rate statistics. A weekly health report can arrive in the inbox to help administrators check whether site email is sending.

Amazon SES accounts have a maximum send rate. WP Offload SES accounts for that rate when sending. If an email fails, the paid edition can queue it for automatic retries and record failures; administrators can also retry failed messages manually. The paid edition can search email entries by recipient or subject, filter by date, view the saved content of a message, and resend it.

Choose settings for each multisite

On a WordPress multisite network, administrators can apply shared email settings across the network or allow subsites to override some or all of them. This supports both centrally managed sending and various configurations for individual subsites.

Set up the email workflow

  1. Install and activate WP Offload SES Lite.
  2. Open Settings > WP Offload SES and use the setup wizard to configure the AWS account.
  3. Choose the default sender name and address, then verify the sending domain or address.
  4. Send a test email and, once the setup is satisfactory, enable site-wide sending.
  5. For multisite, set network or subsite options. Review activity and send-rate statistics, and use the paid edition's reporting or retry utilities when needed.
